TRANSCEND project presented at two major logistics conferences in Hungary

Hungary, October 9th-10th. MAHART Container Center, partner of the TRANSCEND project and transferability demonstrator for the inland port critical infrastructure, has recently participated in two major conferences in Hungary where to promote the work of the TRANSCEND project and have fruitful discussions with relevant stakeholders from Hungary.

MLSZKSZ Intermodal Conference

Held on 9th October in Budapest, this conference brought together around 150 participants from the logistics, transport, and infrastructure sectors to discuss the future of intermodal freight in Hungary and Eastern Europe. A major focus was on terminal expansion, including new facilities planned in the cities of Zalaegerszeg, Szeged, and Debrecen, as well as the soon-to-open Kiskundorozsma terminal. These developments aim to shift large freight volumes from road to rail, supporting regional trade and easing congestion.

Sustainability and EU climate goals were central themes, with speakers emphasizing the need to divert thousands of trucks to rail annually and highlighting investments in renewable energy and energy-efficient terminal operations. Policy frameworks and funding mechanisms were also discussed as crucial for enabling long-term infrastructure projects.

Among the speakers was Zoltán Fábián, Managing Director of MAHART Container Center, who shared insights on market developments and terminal operations. He also introduced to the audience the TRANSCEND project, which sparked the interest of the participants. The project focuses on increasing the resilience of critical infrastructure against cyber, physical and hybrid threats, a topic that has an important role on today’s logistics business.

Finally, the conference emphasized regional and cross-border cooperation as key to strengthening connectivity. Overall, the event highlighted intermodal transport as essential for achieving environmental targets and boosting Hungary’s logistics competitiveness.

HUPRA Conference

The Hungarian Private Rail Association (HUPRA) together with the Association of Rail Siding Operators (VAPE) organized their annual conference on 9-10th October in Eger. On this successful event, presenters came from different organisations, like Hungarian Railway Infrastructure, railway authorities, universities, etc.

MAHART Container Center had the opportunity to present to the audience the terminal, as well as project TRANSCEND in which MCC is a participating partner. The project focuses on cyber and non cyber security which is of imminent importance to the companies involved in intermodal transport. Many professionals from the railway industry participated to the event, representing companies from railway traction and rail siding operation.

Rationale

Ensuring the resilience of Critical Infrastructures (CIs), particularly in the transport sector, has become increasingly vital. Today, there is a strong emphasis on securing information systems and effectively managing risks that could disrupt these essential services. Moreover, CIs are becoming progressively more interdependent across sectors; for example, energy is essential for telecommunications, which in turn supports logistics and transport operations. This growing interconnectedness increases systemic complexity and makes CIs more vulnerable to sophisticated cyber-physical attacks. As a result, understanding and modelling dependencies both across different sectors and domains, and within operators of the same CI, is not only required by regulations, but also crucial for improving preparedness, risk management, and coordinated incident response.

Objective

The primary objective of the ecosystem modelling module is to analyse an ecosystem surrounding a CI as a whole and to provide the foundations for simulating potential impacts on the resilience of a supply chain composed of multiple entities (both internal and external to the CI) by propagating risk consequences across dependencies (domino effect).
